My dog is better off lead than on. How do we sort this out?

💯 start indoors. There’s a BIG difference for dogs between indoors and outdoors. It’s the levels in between that you want to tackle before working outside successfully.

Walk indoors with a leash and touch the doorknob, wait for your dog to give you his attention, then reward him and walk to the kitchen. Repeat repeat repeat.

Then all that’s left to do is go the levels:

- Door knob

- Door unlocks

Where should I begin socializing my puppy?

The best place to begin socializing your puppy is in your own home and neighbourhood! Since they're small, start by carrying them in your arms out on walks so they can still hear, see and even smell everything around them from a safe and comfortable distance.

As you find quiet and safe spots, you can put them down for a little bit. But keep their interactions short and sweet!

Once your pup is ready to socialize with other dogs, group beginner classes for puppies are the best place to go as all the dogs participating should of the same age.

How to help dogs stay calm in unfamiliar or stressful situations?

There are two strategies I like to use!

Practicing calmness in easier situations first.

Simply put, if your dog isn’t calm in easier settings, going into more stressful situations would be too much to ask. But if your dog is able to consistently remain calm in easier settings, then all that’s left to do is work your way up!

Add little things that might cause excitement (not necessarily stress) like toys, people, or dogs and see how your dog does. If your dog remains calm, reinforce and reward, and if they struggle, help them by taking space to help them relax and come back to try again.

My favourite strategy, especially with puppies is to associate an already calm pup (after physical, mental and) with more distracting settings little by little.

What is a good way to start your puppy’s morning routine?

A bathroom break/mini walk. The bladder can’t wait but also the walk should be short so that your puppy doesn’t think that walks are the way to use up all their energy.

Come back inside and go into some fun, physical games for 5–10 mins to properly and safely burn physical energy. Via tug and pull games, fetch, light wrestling with you using an old towel etc.

Go into a mental game like hiding pieces of their breakfast inside an old towel for the puppy to have to use their brain, nose and snuffle each piece. Go for another mini walk now that your puppy is feeling mellow.

End it all by going back in and giving your pup a frozen Kong or a licky mat to chew on.
